AIXI Labs Remote Research Fellowship in AI Safety 2026

The AIXI Labs Research Fellowship supports work on AI safety, meaning the effort to make powerful systems understandable and controllable before they become dangerous. The work is done remotely from anywhere in the world, or from London for those who prefer to be present.

Who can apply

The fellowship is open to applicants of all nationalities at Masters or PhD level. The disciplines targeted are computer science and IT together with mathematics. That the work is remote makes this one of the few opportunities requiring neither relocation nor a visa, and for an African researcher that matters more than any other condition: you do not have to leave the country to take part.

What the fellowship pays

Fellows receive a monthly stipend between £2,000 and £3,500 depending on experience. The work is research in the proper sense: what is expected is publishable results or usable tools, not attendance at training sessions. Anyone working remotely should factor the time difference with London into how they organise the working day.

Deadline and how to apply

There is no fixed deadline. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and previous applicants remain eligible for later rounds. Two things follow from that: you can apply whenever your case is ready, and a rejection in one round does not close the door on the next.

Before you apply

A rolling process rewards whoever arrives with something to show. Prepare a concrete research artefact, however small: a paper, an experiment, or code addressing a specific problem in model safety. A general statement of interest in the field is the weakest kind of application that arrives, and it is also the most common.
