PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa working on environment, climate or agriculture can apply to AGNES for a research grant of up to EUR 7,000. Applications in English close on 16 October 2026.
The AGNES-BAYER Science Foundation Research Grant 2026 is offered by the African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES) to doctoral researchers. It is a separate programme from the AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grants for Junior Researchers, which has its own page on this site, so treat the two calls as different applications.
Who can apply
The call is for PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa. Your doctoral project should belong to one of two areas: environment and climate, or agriculture. If your thesis sits in another discipline, this grant is not the right fit.
What it offers
Each successful applicant receives a maximum of EUR 7,000 in total. Build your research plan so that its costs stay within that ceiling, and be ready to explain how the money moves your PhD work forward.
Deadline
All applications must be submitted online by 16 October 2026 at 23:59 GMT. Convert that cut-off to your local time and aim to finish a few days early, because a slow connection on the last evening can cost you the round.
Before you apply
Every part of the application must be written in English, including your proposal and supporting documents. Read the full call on the official AGNES page for the list of required documents and any format rules, then ask your supervisor to review your proposal before you submit it.
