Grants of EUR 2,300 to EUR 3,000 let doctoral candidates from sub-Saharan Africa spend one to two months at a host institution in another African country. Apply by 16 October 2026.

The African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES) funds short research stays for doctoral candidates who need facilities, data or supervision that are available in another sub-Saharan African country. The call has a general grant open to all candidates and a special grant reserved for women; women may apply for both but can receive only one.

Who can apply

Applicants must be nationals of a sub-Saharan African country and registered for a doctorate at a university in the region. They must already have published at least one paper from their thesis work in a journal indexed by Scopus or Web of Science, and they need a confirmed scientific host and an agreed work plan before applying. All research fields are accepted, from the sciences to the humanities, law and social sciences.

What the grant pays

The grant covers travel and subsistence, and part of it can go to the host institute as a research allowance for bench fees. The ceiling depends on the length of the stay: up to EUR 2,300 for one month and up to EUR 3,000 for two months. The grant cannot fund a stay retroactively.

Deadline and documents

Applications must be submitted online by 16 October 2026 at 23:59 GMT, in English.
