Notre Dame PhD in Sustainable Development 2027 with full funding

The Keough School at the University of Notre Dame is taking applications for its doctorate in sustainable development, starting in the autumn of 2027. It is a funded programme, not a place you pay for, and the faculty works closely on the problems of the Global South.

What the funding covers

Admitted students receive comprehensive financial support, including: A 12-month stipend for living expenses. Full tuition scholarship. Health insurance subsidy. Up to $4,000 for conference presentations and professional development. In return the programme expects you to apply for at least one substantial external grant or fellowship of your own by the fourth year, which is good training rather than a burden.

What you would study

The doctorate is interdisciplinary and carries a STEM designation. The core covers climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental governance and development policy, taught through five required courses in the first two years. Dissertation work begins in the third year, and most students finish in five.

Who can apply

The programme welcomes students from diverse academic, cultural and professional backgrounds, so there is no single required first degree. What it asks for is a strong academic foundation in a relevant field and a demonstrated commitment to global challenges in sustainable development. Applicants who are not native English speakers submit a language test, either the international English testing system, the American equivalent or the Duolingo test.

The application goes through the graduate school portal and needs a statement of purpose, academic transcripts, a language test result where required, a writing sample and three letters of recommendation. Ask for the letters early: three referees moving at their own pace is the usual reason a file misses a deadline.

Deadline

Applications for the Notre Dame Ph.D. in Sustainable Development are now open for a Fall 2027 start. Apply by December 1, 2026. That leaves enough time to sit a language test if you do not already hold a valid result.
