Leading for Humanity 2027: Tutu Foundation Leadership Programme

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation is inviting nominations for the 2027 Leading for Humanity cohort, a residential leadership programme held in South Africa. Nominations opened on 11 September 2026 and close on 14 October 2026.

Leading for Humanity is an immersive residential journey built around courageous conversations, peer exchange and personal reflection. Participants work through themes of self-repair, forgiveness, purpose and Ubuntu, and leave with a stronger moral compass and a lasting network of change-makers.

Who should be nominated. The Foundation welcomes leaders of any age, sector or life experience who stand up for truth, human rights and justice in the spirit of Archbishop Tutu, and who are ready to engage in demanding, vulnerable conversations. Both South African and international candidates are encouraged. Self-nominations are accepted, as are nominations from colleagues, mentors, employers and community members.

What is covered. The Foundation covers all programme costs, accommodation and meals. Travel to and from South Africa is not covered and remains the responsibility of participants or their sponsors, which is the single line to plan for if you are applying from elsewhere on the continent.

How selection works. Nominations are assessed against demonstrated leadership, alignment with the Archbishop's values, commitment to social justice and the diversity of the cohort. Shortlisted nominees are invited for interviews before the final group is confirmed.

A nomination itself is short: a motivation explaining why the person embodies courageous leadership, their contact details, a brief biography, and supporting material such as a CV or reference letters.
