Asharami Square Energy Reporting Fellowship 2026 for journalists across Africa

What is the fellowship?

Asharami Square is Sahara Group's thought-leadership platform on energy, governance and sustainability, and the fellowship invests directly in the journalists who tell Africa's energy story. It looks for bold, evidence-based reporting that uncovers underreported energy issues and proposes practical solutions.

Who can apply?

The fellowship is open to practising journalists and media professionals across Africa working in print, broadcast, online or multimedia journalism at the time of application. Entries must be original, published or broadcast stories on Africa's energy sector, including oil and gas, power, access, policy, regulation and the energy transition.

What do winners receive?

The overall winner receives a cash prize of USD 3,500, within a total fellowship value of up to USD 5,000. The winner and the top 10 finalists join a capacity-building programme with masterclasses, workshops, facility tours across the energy value chain and mentorship from industry leaders.

How and when to apply

Applications are submitted online through the fellowship portal with a link or copy of the published story, a short application form, a public interest statement and a letter of attestation from your editor. Eligible stories are those published or broadcast between January and 30 November 2026, and an independent panel reviews all entries after the window closes.
