FOR-GHP Fellowship 2027: outbreak readiness for sub-Saharan Africa

What is FOR-GHP?

The Fellowship in Outbreak Readiness for Global Health Protection is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health and delivered by a consortium that includes the Africa Field Epidemiology Network, the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, the Robert Koch Institute and Swiss TPH. It trains public health experts to become facilitators, multipliers and leaders in outbreak preparedness and response.

How is the programme structured?

Over 18 months fellows complete seven eLearning modules, attend three in-person one-week workshops in Germany, Ghana and Uganda, and develop and pilot teaching case studies at their home institutions between workshops. The programme runs from 1 December 2026 to 7 July 2028 and ends with a certificate and ECTS credits from the University of Basel.

Who can apply?

Applicants must come from and work in sub-Saharan Africa, have at least 2 years of professional experience in public health or the biomedical sector, and hold a degree or proficiency in public health, epidemiology, microbiology or an allied health science. An employer endorsement and a recent reference letter are required. Advanced English is essential; accepted proofs include TOEFL iBT 79-80, IELTS 6.0, native-speaker status or higher education completed in English.

What is covered?

There are no tuition fees. The budget covers economy-class flights, visa fees and accommodation for the three workshops, with daily meals provided; no per diems are paid. Applications close on 21 October 2026 at midnight CET, and selection interviews take place in January 2027.
