Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders

The Mandela Washington Fellowship brings young African leaders to the United States for an executive-style programme run by the U.S. Department of State. For 2027 it plans to host about 550 Fellows, who start with a six-week institute at a US college or university and then meet American leaders from the public and private sectors.

Who can apply

Applicants must be citizens and residents of one of 49 African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Ethiopia, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire and DR Congo. The age window is 25 to 35 on the deadline date, although the programme says exceptional younger candidates may be considered. US citizens and permanent residents cannot apply, and neither can former Fellows. Strong English is required: applicants must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking it.

What the selection panel looks for

The competition is merit-based. Reviewers look for a proven record in business and trade, emerging technologies, governance or security, a clear interest in partnerships with American organisations, and a commitment to return home and put the experience to work. Semi-finalists are interviewed in person by the US embassy or consulate in their own country, and they must bring a passport or other government photo ID to that interview.

Deadline

Applications opened on 22 September 2026 and close on 13 October 2026. That is a three-week window, so write the essays offline first, ask a colleague to check them against the selection criteria above, and paste them into the form only once they are final. Fellows may not bring spouses or children with them during the programme.
