Global South Visiting Scholar Programme 2027-2028 at Allard Law

The Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia hosts one visiting scholar from the Global South each cycle, and applications for the 2027-2028 round close on 15 January 2027.

The school describes the placement as fully funded. The selected scholar spends a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of three months in residence in Canada, giving lectures, holding sessions with faculty and graduate students, and pursuing independent research. The stay must fall within the law school's winter term.

Who can apply. Only faculty currently appointed at institutions located in the Global South are considered. For this competition the Global South means every country on the OECD list eligible for official development assistance, which covers the great majority of states on the continent. The school says it is looking for an early to mid-career scholar.

What the programme is for. It exists to build academic exchange and new research directions between Allard faculty and international partners, and to strengthen the resources of those partner institutions. A proposal that sets out plainly what the collaboration returns to your own faculty is therefore likely to read well.

This is a single award rather than a cohort, which makes it competitive. The requirements, though, are lighter than most funded residencies abroad: no language test is specified, the commitment can be as short as two weeks, and the call is open across the whole of law rather than a narrow subfield.
