A.S. Hornby Scholarship 2027/28 for English teachers, MEd TESOL at Exeter

The Hornby Educational Trust pays for English language teachers from low and middle income countries to take a master's degree in teaching English at the University of Exeter. Up to ten fully funded places are on offer for entry in September 2027.

What the scholarship covers

The award is fully funded and covers the MEd TESOL programme itself. It is tied to that one degree: shorter postgraduate certificate or diploma routes are not covered. A Hornby scholarship is not combined with other awards, and if you win another one the trust pays only the difference where its award is larger.

Who can apply

Four conditions decide this, and all four must hold. You live and work in a country on the development assistance list of low and middle income economies. You have at least three years of full-time teaching experience in English language teaching or a related professional role, counted after your first degree. You hold an undergraduate degree at a standard equivalent to a UK upper second class or better. And you do not already hold a doctorate in the field, or a master's in it from a British university.

How the application works

You apply for the scholarship first, using the trust's own form. There is no need to apply to the degree programme before that, and shortlisted applicants are told separately how to do it. The university and the trust read every application together, which is unusual and means one file serves both readers.

The timetable after the deadline

Shortlisting decisions arrive in early January 2027 at the latest. Interviews are held in the second half of February 2027, and the final outcome reaches shortlisted candidates in early March 2027. Keep that stretch of the calendar free, because interview slots are fixed.

The closing date for applications for this award is 22 November 2026. Start early on the evidence of your teaching experience, because references and employment letters from schools rarely arrive quickly.
