Joint MSc in Environmental Risks and Human Security in Bonn, Germany 2026/2027

The United Nations University and the University of Bonn run a joint Master of Science in the geography of environmental risks and human security. It is taught in Germany, and a number of places carry a fully funded DAAD EPOS scholarship for students from developing countries.

What the scholarship covers

The EPOS scheme funds the studies of applicants from developing countries; admission to the programme and the award of a scholarship are decided separately, so a place does not guarantee the money. Applicants who want the scholarship submit extra papers with the same application: the DAAD checklist, the DAAD form, a scholarship motivation letter, a reference from the current employer and work certificates.

Who can apply

You need a first degree in geography or a closely related field, and most of your coursework has to sit in human geography and social sciences, research methods, or physical and environmental sciences. The scholarship route adds its own bar: at least two years of relevant work experience after the first degree. The programme is not aimed at engineering graduates, and holders of a doctorate cannot be considered.

English requirement

Teaching is in English and proof of the language is required. The accepted certificates and minimum scores are listed on the official page, and IELTS is accepted from a band of 6.5.

How to apply

The whole file goes by email as a single PDF package in the exact order the university sets out. Late and incomplete files are refused, and paper applications sent by post are not read at all. The degree is two years long, so plan for a stay of that length in Germany.

Deadline

Applications are accepted until 31 October 2026, a window the university still marks as to be confirmed. Check the official page before you send anything, and start the language certificate early because test slots fill up.
