Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship Programme 2027

What is the Fellowship Programme?

The Software Sustainability Institute selects Fellows who champion better research software practice in their fields. The 2027 cohort runs from 1 January 2027 to 31 March 2028, and Fellows use the period to deliver the plans set out in their application, such as training, community events or advocacy in their institution.

Can applicants outside the United Kingdom apply?

Yes. The programme offers up to three positions for successful international applicants. Because the Institute is UK-funded, applicants without a UK affiliation must show how their plans foster international collaboration or bring a fresh perspective to UK research culture, and explain how they will handle time zones, language and travel costs. Some countries may be excluded because of restrictions on moving funds.

How does selection work?

The application has a six-part form and a six-minute screencast covering who you are professionally, what you do and your plans for the Fellowship. Shortlisted candidates join an Online Selection Day of group activities in November 2026, and final selection combines that day with the Fellowship plan.
