An award of up to GBP 25,000 for early-stage agentic AI tools that support research workflows, open to founders, teams and students of any nationality until 5 October 2026.

What does the grant fund?

The Catalyst Grant backs early-stage software ideas that help research. For the 2026 round Digital Science is looking for agentic AI workflows: tools that plan, execute and review across several steps, sit inside systems researchers already use, and carry audit trails, provenance and governance controls. Target areas include trusted authorship, evidence synthesis, funding and institutional decisions, and publication integrity.

Who can apply?

Anyone with an early-stage idea can enter: founders, research teams, students and individuals from any country. A prototype, a working product or a well-formed concept is enough; revenue or a finished build is not required.

How much is the award?

Up to GBP 25,000, which can be split across more than one recipient. Most applicants do not win, but the organisers say many leave with advice, introductions and a sharper idea.

How and when to apply

Applications opened on 1 September 2026 and close on 5 October 2026 at 17:00 BST. The short form asks for a proposal under set headings: the problem, your workflow, trust and governance, the team, current stage, competitors, vision and fit with Digital Science. Strong applicants are invited to a short interview with a live demo.
