MU-JHU Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Uganda 2026/2027

The MU-JHU Research Collaboration is a long-running partnership between Makerere University and Johns Hopkins University, based in Kampala and known principally for work in HIV and maternal and child health. This fellowship places a postdoctoral researcher inside that programme rather than at a foreign institution.

Who can apply

The fellowship is open to applicants from Uganda at postdoctoral level, in health and medicine. That the position is domestic is its main distinction: a Ugandan researcher can take a funded postdoc without leaving the country, keeping existing clinical or teaching commitments and building a career inside the national research system rather than outside it.

What the fellowship provides

The award combines research funding with a salary stipend, and adds support from both local and international mentors. The mentorship structure is the part worth weighing. A postdoc in a collaboration of this kind gives access to supervisors on both sides of the partnership, which usually matters more for what a researcher can publish afterwards than the size of the stipend does.

The application deadline is 30th September 2026 at midnight. Because the position is a research post rather than a study award, the file is judged on your publication record and on the fit between your work and the collaboration's active studies.

Read what MU-JHU is currently running and write the application to sit inside it. A proposal that connects to a study already under way is far more likely to succeed than one that arrives with an unrelated research plan, however good, because a postdoc here is expected to contribute to the collaboration's programme and not simply to be hosted by it.
