Scholarships in the Netherlands 2027 for African students and professionals

What is hosted in the Netherlands?

AfriWay tracks 5 open programmes hosted in the Netherlands. Three are scholarships, one is a traineeship among the internships and one sits with the training category. They come from 5 distinct funders, and 2 of the 5 are fully funded.

The mix is unusual for a European destination. Two universities fund Masters places, a research institute funds a short professional course, and a dairy company funds a graduate traineeship. Nothing here is a government scholarship, which matters because the eligibility rules are set by each institution rather than by a national list.

One practical consequence is that there is no single portal. Each of the five has its own form, its own supporting documents and its own definition of a complete application, so treat them as five separate projects rather than as one search.

The two fully funded routes

Start with these if money is the constraint.

Wageningen University Africa Scholarship 2027/28 for Masters from Wageningen University & Research is aimed squarely at African applicants. The scholarship covers tuition for the full 24 months of an MSc, a living allowance for the same period, travel to and from the country, visa costs and health insurance. It is open to all African countries and to any field the university teaches.

UNU Migration Management Diploma Programme in the Netherlands (closed) from is shorter and more specific. The Migration Management Diploma Programme runs for 3 months, from 5 April 2027 to 24 June 2027, and the scholarship covers flights, accommodation, visa fees, meals, daily living expenses, health insurance and field trip costs. It is written for working professionals rather than for students, and the eligible list runs across 54 countries on the continent plus India.

Who can apply, and from which countries?

Eligibility splits into three shapes here.

Two programmes are open to all nationalities: TU Delft Justus & Louise van Effen Excellence Scholarships from TU Delft and Maastricht University Social Justice Scholarship from Maastricht University. So is FrieslandCampina Global Traineeship 2027 for Graduates (closed) from FrieslandCampina, which also places trainees in Malaysia alongside the Dutch sites.

One is African-only in the broad sense: the Wageningen scholarship names every African country.

One works from an explicit list that covers North Africa through Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, and then most of the rest of the continent, from Angola and Ghana through Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. If your country is on that list and you already work in migration, public administration or a related area, that is the most complete package on this page.

What each programme actually pays

TU Delft Justus & Louise van Effen Excellence Scholarships covers the full tuition fee for a TU Delft MSc, calculated at either the statutory or the institutional rate depending on your registered nationality, and adds a contribution towards living costs across 24 months. It does not name a flight allowance.

Maastricht University Social Justice Scholarship pays EUR 1,550 a month for living expenses across 13 months, which the university totals at EUR 20,150. It makes 1 award, restricts applicants to 35 or under and is limited to law. That combination makes it the narrowest entry here and also the least likely to be crowded.

FrieslandCampina Global Traineeship 2027 for Graduates (closed) is a paid graduate traineeship rather than a scholarship. It runs 36 months, starts on 1 March 2027, and takes graduates in business, economics or computing who are fluent in English. Three years is long for a graduate scheme, and the placement spans two countries, so read the mobility terms before you commit to it.

The deadline calendar

The window is wide, which is unusual on this site. Four months separate the first deadline from the last.

The traineeship opened on 1 September 2026 and closes at the end of the same month, so its window is a single month rather than a season.

Two deadlines share the same date. If you are eligible for both Masters scholarships, the work does not double, because a single set of transcripts, references and language certificates feeds both files. What does double is the admission application, since each university runs its own.

How to prepare an application in this cycle

The Dutch pattern catches people out, so read this part carefully. For the university scholarships you apply to the degree first and to the money second, and the scholarship deadline is really a deadline for having your admission file complete.

Wageningen states it plainly: your complete MSc application must be in before 1 December 2026, and the English language requirement must be met by the same date. That means test bookings, transcripts and referees need to be organised weeks earlier, not days. Maastricht works the same way, asking you to meet all registration requirements by 1 February 2027, with narrow exceptions for legal residence, tuition payment and the hard copy of your diploma.

Language proof is not optional anywhere on this list. Every one of the 5 programmes expects English, and none of them waives a test. Book the test before you write a single personal statement, because the certificate is the item most likely to arrive late.

Check what the money excludes as well as what it includes. The TU Delft award covers tuition and a living contribution but says nothing about flights, so budget for the trip yourself. The Maastricht award is a living allowance rather than a tuition waiver. Only the two fully funded routes cover travel, insurance and fees together.

Finally, match the programme to your stage. If you are a working professional, the 3-month diploma is a better fit than a two-year degree. If you have just graduated and want to stay in industry, the traineeship pays a salary while a scholarship does not. And if you are still choosing a field, note that three of the five accept any discipline, so the constraint is your level and your country rather than your subject.
