Scholarships, grants and fellowships for Tanzanian applicants 2027

Twenty-five open calls accept applicants from Tanzania and close between 5 and 20 October 2026. That leaves about two weeks. Four of them name Tanzania and six carry AfriWay's fully funded label. Match each call to your level, your field and the experience you can prove before you open a form.

What Tanzanians can apply for before 20 October

The 25 calls are 12 fellowships, eight scholarships, four grants and one training programme, from 24 different funders. Ten accept postdoctoral researchers, eight take master's applicants and eight take PhD candidates. Five are written for working professionals, three set no level requirement, and one names undergraduates.

Eligibility comes first. Four calls list Tanzania by name: Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed), Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed), Commonwealth Master's Scholarships 2027/28 for Study in the UK and University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027. Two more accept every African country, two are limited to Sub-Saharan Africa and three are open to developing countries. The other 14 accept every nationality, so there you compete with applicants from everywhere.

Master's and PhD options follow in the next two sections. The calls below suit other profiles.

Postdocs. Cornell Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainability 2027 pays a salary of USD 65,000 a year for three years, plus USD 12,000 a year for research and travel. IAIFI Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027-2030 at MIT (closed) pays around 15% more than the minimum postdoc salary at MIT. Humanities and social science researchers can weigh Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship 2027 at CRASSH, Cambridge (closed), Mohamed Ali Foundation Fellowship 2027 at Durham University and CEES Fellowship Program Spring 2027: Research Stay in Switzerland (closed). At Bayreuth Academy Fellowships in African Studies, Germany (closed), fellows without pay from home receive EUR 2,500 a month. At AIAS Visiting Fellowships 2027: Unsalaried Research Visits in Denmark (closed), you bring your salary with you from your home institution.

Professionals. Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed) selects 550 fellows aged 35 or under in business, management and public policy. Leading for Humanity 2027: Tutu Foundation Leadership Programme (closed) brings its participants to South Africa. Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship Programme 2027 (closed) runs for 15 months in the United Kingdom for computing professionals, Digital Science Catalyst Grant 2026 for AI tools that act on research (closed) offers up to GBP 25,000 that can be split between recipients, and OpenAI AI and Teen Development Research Grant Program 2026 (closed) makes research grants of up to USD 1 million each.

Undergraduates and the arts. The Image Centre Research Fellowships 2027 in Toronto for photography research (closed) is the only call that names undergraduates, and it has six places. Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program 2027 in the United States (closed) lists stipends from USD 45,000 to USD 65,000 a year, by category, for master's, PhD and postdoctoral researchers in the sciences, humanities and arts.

Fully funded options in deadline order

AfriWay labels a scholarship or fellowship fully funded only when it pays both tuition and a living stipend. For a grant, a stipend is enough. Six calls pass that test.

Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed) closes first, at 11:00 UTC on 6 October 2026, which is 14:00 in Dar es Salaam. It names Tanzania, accepts any subject and pays tuition and a living stipend. You need at least two years of work experience.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027: Fully Funded Graduate Study at Stanford (closed) closes the same evening, at 23:00 in Dar es Salaam. It funds up to three years of any graduate degree at Stanford: tuition and associated fees, a stipend for living and academic costs, and an economy-class ticket for one trip a year.

ARC-GSSP Postgraduate Scholarships for African Students (closed) closes at 02:59 on 8 October, Dar es Salaam time. Open to every African country, it pays full tuition for up to two years of postgraduate study in mathematics, engineering or environment and climate, with a living stipend and travel support, at hosts in South Africa, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Ghana.

AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grants 2026 for PhD Researchers (closed) is the only grant in the group. It covers travel and subsistence for a stay of one to two months, which earns it the label, but it does not pay for a degree.

Two calls that name Tanzania close on 20 October. Commonwealth Master's Scholarships 2027/28 for Study in the UK covers approved tuition in full, the return airfare and a stipend of GBP 1,712 a month, or GBP 2,000 in the London area, for a one-year master's. University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027 pays full overseas PhD tuition, a stipend, return travel, a Research Training Support Grant and fieldwork costs.

Mohamed Ali Foundation Fellowship 2027 at Durham University comes close without the label. It provides accommodation, all meals, a research travel grant and an honorarium at the end of the fellowship.

Calls limited to Africa or to developing countries

None of the 25 calls is reserved for Tanzania alone, and none is limited to East Africa. Seven are limited to Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa or developing countries instead.

ARC-GSSP Postgraduate Scholarships for African Students (closed) and African Climate Collaborative PhD Fellowships 2027 at UCT (closed) accept every African country. African Climate Collaborative PhD Fellowships 2027 at UCT (closed) offers 12 PhD fellowships of 48 months in environment, climate and social science, and it closes at 23:00 South African time on 15 October, which is midnight in Dar es Salaam.

Two AGNES grants are limited to Sub-Saharan Africa. AGNES-BAYER Science Foundation Research Grant 2026 for PhD Students (closed) funds PhD research in environment, climate or agriculture with up to EUR 7,000 per successful applicant. AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grants 2026 for PhD Researchers (closed) pays EUR 2,300 to EUR 3,000 for a research stay of one to two months outside your own country, in any field. Both applications must be written in English.

Three master's programmes in Germany carry DAAD EPOS scholarships for developing countries, and each asks for at least two years of experience. ISATEC (MSc Marine Biology), University of Bremen: DAAD EPOS 2027 (closed) asks for English at level C1. Sustainable Renewable Energy Technologies MSc, Oldenburg: EPOS 2027 (closed) accepts level B2, lasts 24 months and sets its deadline a year before entry. International Health MSc, Charité Berlin: DAAD EPOS Scholarship 2027 (closed) leads to admission in September 2027.

Of the four named lists, University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027 is the shortest: 11 countries, with Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia beside Tanzania, but not Kenya.

Deadlines closest first, in Dar es Salaam time

Tanzania keeps East Africa Time (EAT), three hours ahead of UTC, all year. Funders state closing hours in their own time zones, and many of those hours land late at night or early the next morning in Dar es Salaam. Every stated hour below is converted.

Start with the rules you cannot change before a deadline. Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed) and the three German master's programmes ask for at least two years of experience, and AIAS Visiting Fellowships 2027: Unsalaried Research Visits in Denmark (closed) asks for four. Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed) takes applicants up to age 35.

English is the working language almost everywhere here, but the proof differs, and none of the 25 listings says that IELTS is waived. University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027 asks for a valid IELTS certificate. Sustainable Renewable Energy Technologies MSc, Oldenburg: EPOS 2027 (closed) accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge, PTE Academic, TOEIC, telc or UNIcert at level B2. ISATEC (MSc Marine Biology), University of Bremen: DAAD EPOS 2027 (closed) wants proof at level C1 from applicants whose native language is not English or whose last study was not completely taught in English, so read that rule on the official page before you assume that an English-medium degree exempts you. CEES Fellowship Program Spring 2027: Research Stay in Switzerland (closed) wants every document in English, sent as a single PDF. Mohamed Ali Foundation Fellowship 2027 at Durham University says that making full use of its collection requires good reading knowledge of Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, French and English.

Line up referees and letters this week. IAIFI Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027-2030 at MIT (closed) counts reference letters as part of the file that must arrive by 7 October, and The Image Centre Research Fellowships 2027 in Toronto for photography research (closed) wants letters of reference sent with the application by email. At Bayreuth Academy Fellowships in African Studies, Germany (closed), the EUR 2,500 monthly rate depends on a confirmation from your home institution or your last funding organisation.

Budget for what is not covered. Leading for Humanity 2027: Tutu Foundation Leadership Programme (closed) pays programme costs, accommodation and meals, but participants or their sponsors pay for travel to and from South Africa. The Image Centre Research Fellowships 2027 in Toronto for photography research (closed) has no separate travel or accommodation allowance, so its CAD 10,000 stipend has to pay for travel, research and related costs.

Submit a day early. Six of the closing hours above fall between midnight and 03:00 in Dar es Salaam, when a dropped connection leaves no time for a second attempt.
