Education Funding for African Teachers and Researchers in 2027

Seven funded routes for people who work in education, from a fully funded TESOL master's in the United Kingdom to a grant for organisations running classroom programmes.

Education funding is oddly structured. Almost nothing here is aimed at people who want to study education. Most of it is aimed at people who already work in it: teachers, ministry officials, non-profit staff, founders building for classrooms.

That distinction decides which of these seven you can realistically win. Six of the seven ask for experience rather than grades.

The one route built for teachers

A.S. Hornby Scholarship 2027/28 for English teachers, MEd TESOL at Exeter at the University of Exeter is the clearest fit for a working English teacher: a fully tuition-funded master's in TESOL in the United Kingdom, ten awards, restricted to applicants from developing countries, requiring three years of teaching experience. The deadline is 22 November 2026.

Ten places is generous for a named scholarship at a British university, and the experience requirement narrows the field considerably. A teacher with five years in a state school and no publications competes here far better than at a general scholarship.

Note what is covered and what is not. Tuition yes. Everything else is unstated, which in practice means you should budget for living costs and the visa.

Two routes for the research side

UNESCO Japan Young Researchers Fellowships Programme (closed) from UNESCO funds master's and doctoral research in Japan, lists education among seven eligible fields, and is open to nationals of a long list of African member states. It closes 30 September 2026. Applications go through your national commission rather than directly to the funder, which adds weeks that applicants consistently fail to plan for.

Open Doors Russian Scholarship 2027/28 for International Students run by leading Russian universities covers tuition and pays a stipend across undergraduate, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral study, with education among eleven eligible fields. Applications opened 20 August 2026 and close 1 November 2026. Read the coverage line carefully: tuition and stipend are covered, but travel, insurance and accommodation are not.

Money for organisations, not individuals

TEEEM Foundation Community Impact Grant 2026 for non-profits from TEEEM Foundation awards between USD 5,000 and USD 30,000 to non-profit organisations working in education, health, entrepreneurship and social development. It opened 17 August 2026 and closes 1 November 2026.

This is a different application from everything else here. The applicant is an organisation with a registration number, a bank account and a track record, not a person with a CV. If you run or work for a community education project, this is the most directly relevant entry on the page. If you are an individual teacher, it is not for you.

Three routes for people building things

Injini AI Venture Builder and Incubation Program (closed) from Injini is an accelerator for education and entrepreneurship ventures across nine southern African countries, paying USD 25,000 across five places over eight months with travel and accommodation covered. Two years of experience required. Closes 27 September 2026.

D-Prize Global Competition 2026-2027 for Distribution Entrepreneurs from D-Prize pays up to USD 20,000 to distribute proven interventions, and its published list includes phone-based tutoring and foundational literacy in resource-limited classrooms. Opened 14 September 2026, closes 15 November 2026.

World Bank Group Young Professionals Program 2027 (closed) at the World Bank takes master's and doctoral holders with at least two years of experience, across six fields including education, based in the United States. Deadline 30 September 2026.

Sorting the seven by who you are

Classroom teacher with three or more years: A.S. Hornby Scholarship 2027/28 for English teachers, MEd TESOL at Exeter first. Nothing else on this page is designed around your profile.

Ministry or policy official: World Bank Group Young Professionals Program 2027 (closed), and the two-year minimum is enforced.

Researcher: UNESCO Japan Young Researchers Fellowships Programme (closed) and Open Doors Russian Scholarship 2027/28 for International Students, both of which fund degrees rather than projects.

Running an education non-profit: TEEEM Foundation Community Impact Grant 2026 for non-profits.

Building an education product or service: Injini AI Venture Builder and Incubation Program (closed) if you are in southern Africa, D-Prize Global Competition 2026-2027 for Distribution Entrepreneurs if you are anywhere.

What education funders read for

Three things recur across all seven, and none of them is a transcript.

Classroom evidence. Committees in this field have almost always taught. A statement that describes a specific lesson that failed and what you changed reads as genuine in a way that a paragraph about passion for education never does.

Scale logic. Every funder here is implicitly asking what happens after the money stops. An application that explains how the work continues without further funding answers a question the form does not ask directly.

Local specificity. Naming the district, the curriculum, the language of instruction and the actual constraint separates serious applications from generic ones immediately.

The application most people should write first

If you teach and you are unsure where to start, write the Exeter file. Not because it is easiest, but because it forces the material every other application on this page also needs.

It asks you to account for three years of teaching. That means writing down what you actually did: which year groups, which curriculum, what changed in your classroom because you were in it. Most teachers have never written this out, and the exercise is uncomfortable for a reason. It exposes whether you have been teaching for three years or teaching the first year three times.

Once that document exists, it feeds directly into UNESCO Japan Young Researchers Fellowships Programme (closed) as the professional background section, into World Bank Group Young Professionals Program 2027 (closed) as the experience statement, and into TEEEM Foundation Community Impact Grant 2026 for non-profits as the organisational track record if you are applying on behalf of a project. The specific examples transfer even when the framing does not.

Two further pieces are worth building once. A page describing one intervention you ran and what the results were, with whatever numbers you have, even rough ones. And a short statement about the gap you want to close, written about a named place rather than about education in general.

The calendar

Deadlines run from 27 September 2026 to 22 November 2026, with the two heaviest applications landing at the end.

That order is helpful. A.S. Hornby Scholarship 2027/28 for English teachers, MEd TESOL at Exeter on 22 November and TEEEM Foundation Community Impact Grant 2026 for non-profits on 1 November are the two that most reward preparation, and both fall after the September cluster clears. If you are reading this in early October, those are the two to work on.

Reference letters are the usual bottleneck. School principals and ministry supervisors are slow, and several of these ask for two. Request them the week you decide to apply.

Confirm every deadline and every award count on the funder's own page. Education programmes change their intake numbers between cycles more often than most, and only the official page is authoritative.
