Law Scholarships and Fellowships for Africans in 2027
Five funded law programmes tracked here, from a fully salaried Harvard post to a three-month residency in Canada, and how their eligibility rules differ.
Law is a small field on this site and an unusually varied one. Five programmes are currently tracked, and no two of them want the same person. One pays a full salary for two years. One pays about fifteen hundred euros. One is closed to everyone who is not South African.
Read the eligibility line before the money line. In this field it changes the answer more often.
The money, plainly
Harvard Environmental Fellows Program 2027 with a USD 92,000 salary from Harvard University is the largest by a wide margin: USD 92,000 per year for 24 months in United States, with travel and insurance covered, across five awards. It is a postdoctoral post rather than a studentship, and it sits at the intersection of environment, law, economics and public policy. If you hold a doctorate and your work touches environmental regulation, nothing else on this list competes.
Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: USD 10,000 remote fellowship on tech and democracy (closed) pays USD 10,000 over twelve months and runs remotely. Run by Tech Policy Press, it covers technology policy, democracy and law together, and it is open to all nationalities with no relocation at all.
Global South Visiting Scholar Programme 2027-2028 at Allard Law at Peter A. Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia is a residency of up to three months in Canada, described by the school as fully funded. It takes one scholar per cycle, and only from institutions in developing countries.
Maastricht University Social Justice Scholarship at Maastricht University in Netherlands is a single master's award of EUR 1,550 over thirteen months, capped at age 35. Small money, but it attaches to a social justice programme rather than sitting alone.
DFFE Full-time Bursary Programme 2027 for South African students in environmental fields (closed) is the outlier: a bursary from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment paying ZAR 80,000 per year in tuition, restricted to students of South Africa and spanning undergraduate through doctoral level.
Eligibility is the real filter
Three different gates operate across these five, and they exclude different people.
Nationality: DFFE Full-time Bursary Programme 2027 for South African students in environmental fields (closed) is South African only. Global South Visiting Scholar Programme 2027-2028 at Allard Law requires that you already hold a faculty appointment at an institution in a developing country, which rules out students entirely but makes the field far less crowded for those who qualify.
Career stage: Harvard Environmental Fellows Program 2027 with a USD 92,000 salary needs a completed doctorate. Maastricht University Social Justice Scholarship needs a master's admission and an age under 36. Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: USD 10,000 remote fellowship on tech and democracy (closed) wants working professionals with a position already formed on tech policy.
Age: only two of the five mention it, but when they do it is absolute. Thirty-five at Maastricht University, and no discretion stated.
None of the five publishes an IELTS requirement, which is unusual in a field where language tests are normally assumed. That does not mean language is ignored. It means the funders judge it from your writing sample and your interview rather than from a score, which favours anyone who has practised or published in English without ever paying for a test.
Two scholarships and three fellowships
The split matters for how you plan. The two scholarships attach to a degree: you are applying to study, and the funding follows admission. The three fellowships attach to work you are already doing, and nobody checks your enrolment status.
That distinction changes your timeline by about a year. A scholarship route means securing a university place first, which usually means starting twelve to eighteen months before the money arrives. A fellowship route can go from application to award inside a single cycle.
African lawyers already in practice consistently underuse the second route. The assumption that funded opportunities require going back to school is wrong here, and three of these five prove it.
There is a second consequence. Scholarship money is usually tied to a specific institution and evaporates if you defer or transfer, while fellowship money follows the person. If your circumstances are likely to change inside the next two years, that difference is not administrative trivia.
The calendar
Deadlines run from 24 September 2026 through to 1 February 2027. The spread is wide enough that you can realistically prepare for more than one, and the later two are the most substantial.
A practical order: if you hold a doctorate, Harvard Environmental Fellows Program 2027 with a USD 92,000 salary on 1 December 2026 deserves your best effort and should be drafted in October. If you teach, Global South Visiting Scholar Programme 2027-2028 at Allard Law closes on 15 January 2027 and asks for far less paperwork than its prestige suggests. If you are in practice and write, Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: USD 10,000 remote fellowship on tech and democracy (closed) is the cheapest application on the list in time terms.
What each application really wants
None of these five is won with credentials alone.
Harvard Environmental Fellows Program 2027 with a USD 92,000 salary wants a research proposal that a scientist and a lawyer can both read. The programme is interdisciplinary by design, and proposals written purely in the vocabulary of one discipline read as a poor fit.
Global South Visiting Scholar Programme 2027-2028 at Allard Law asks what you would give and what you would take. The school states openly that the programme exists partly to strengthen the resources of partner institutions, so a proposal that names what your own faculty gains answers a question the committee is actually asking.
Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: USD 10,000 remote fellowship on tech and democracy (closed) wants a position. Not a topic, a position: something you would argue in public and defend under pushback from people who disagree with you.
Maastricht University Social Justice Scholarship and DFFE Full-time Bursary Programme 2027 for South African students in environmental fields (closed) work differently again, because both run through a university admissions process. The funding decision follows the academic one, so the scholarship essay matters less than the application file underneath it. Get admitted first. Treat the award as a second, separate campaign rather than a single combined one, and start the admission paperwork a full cycle earlier than the funding deadline suggests.
Where to start if you are early
If you are still an undergraduate or a master's student outside South Africa, this field currently has little for you, and that is an honest answer rather than a discouraging one. Law funding concentrates at postdoctoral and professional level.
The useful move is lateral. Environment, public policy and human rights programmes on this site regularly accept law backgrounds without naming law in their field list. Four of the five programmes here list law alongside another field precisely because funders think in problems rather than faculties.
Practically, that means searching by problem instead of by discipline. Climate litigation sits under environment. Data protection sits under technology and governance. Refugee and asylum work sits under public policy. A law graduate who only ever filters for the word law will miss most of what is open to them, and the gap is not small.
Check each official page before applying. Deadlines and award numbers change between cycles, and only the funder's own page is authoritative.
