Agriculture and Food Systems Funding for Africans in 2027
Eight funded routes into agriculture, from a four-year doctoral scholarship in Australia to a food-systems challenge paying up to a quarter of a million dollars.
Agriculture funding on this site splits into two economies that barely touch each other. One funds research: degrees, fellowships, laboratory time. The other funds delivery: getting something that already works into the hands of farmers who do not have it.
Applicants routinely apply to the wrong economy. A doctoral candidate pitching a venture competition reads as unfocused, and a founder submitting a research proposal reads as unfunded. Eight programmes are tracked here, and the first decision is which half you belong to.
The research half
Adelaide University Research Scholarships in Australia at Adelaide University in Australia is the deepest commitment on this list: 48 months of doctoral or master's research with tuition, stipend and insurance covered. Applications opened on 31 August 2026 and close on 30 September 2026. Agriculture sits alongside four other eligible fields there, so a proposal that bridges food and climate, or food and health, fits the call better than a narrow one.
AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship 2027 in South Africa (closed) from AfricaLics is shorter and far more targeted. Three months in South Africa, with flights, housing, insurance and a USD 600 per month stipend, open to doctoral students already enrolled at African universities in developing countries. Closes 2 October 2026. It does not fund your degree. It funds three months of concentrated writing time in the middle of it, which for most doctoral candidates is the actual bottleneck.
World Bank Group Young Professionals Program 2027 (closed) at the World Bank in United States takes a different profile again: master's or doctoral holders with at least two years of work behind them, across economics, policy, health, education, environment and agriculture. Deadline 30 September 2026.
The delivery half
D-Prize Global Competition 2026-2027 for Distribution Entrepreneurs from D-Prize pays up to USD 20,000 to launch an organisation that distributes a proven intervention. Post-harvest storage, quality inputs and farmer training all sit on its published list. Opened 14 September 2026, closes 15 November 2026. It explicitly prefers people who have not yet built anything.
Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge 2027 by Welthungerhilfe operates at a different scale: between USD 25,000 and USD 250,000 across 13 awards for food-system innovation, open to professionals of any nationality. Applications open 1 January 2027 and close 15 February 2027. That is the largest single award on this page.
Jasiri Talent Investor Cohort 9: food-systems venture programme with USD 28,000 grants from Jasiri is an accelerator rather than a grant, restricted to Kenya, Rwanda and Ethiopia. Thirteen months, USD 28,000, with stipend, travel, insurance and accommodation all covered, and a rolling deadline. Cohort activities start 18 January 2027. For a founder in one of those three countries it is the most complete package on this list, and the narrow eligibility means the applicant pool is a fraction of the global competitions.
Two competitions with low entry cost
APNI African Plant Nutrition Outreach Fellowship Competition (closed) from APNI pays USD 5,000 plus travel to African professionals working on plant nutrition, and accepts applications in English or French. Deadline 21 September 2026. Bilingual eligibility is rare enough in this sector to be worth flagging.
20th SEARCA Photo Contest 2026: USD 1,000 top prize for food-system photos (closed) from SEARCA is a photo contest with prizes between USD 500 and USD 1,000, open at any level to applicants across Africa, closing 30 September 2026. It is the cheapest application here in effort terms and the only one that asks for images rather than prose.
Small prizes get dismissed. They should not be. A named award on a CV changes how the next committee reads you, and these two are winnable in an afternoon of good work.
Which of the eight fits you
Sorted by who you actually are rather than by what they pay:
Enrolled in a doctorate at an African university: AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship 2027 in South Africa (closed) first, then Adelaide University Research Scholarships in Australia only if you are willing to restart elsewhere.
Holding a master's with work experience: World Bank Group Young Professionals Program 2027 (closed) is the one designed for you, and the two-year minimum is enforced.
Running or starting something: D-Prize Global Competition 2026-2027 for Distribution Entrepreneurs if you are early, Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge 2027 if you have traction and numbers, Jasiri Talent Investor Cohort 9: food-systems venture programme with USD 28,000 grants if you are in East Africa.
Working in the sector without a higher degree: APNI African Plant Nutrition Outreach Fellowship Competition (closed) and 20th SEARCA Photo Contest 2026: USD 1,000 top prize for food-system photos (closed), both of which ignore credentials entirely.
The calendar is front-loaded
Five of the eight close between 21 September 2026 and 2 October 2026. That cluster is brutal if you find this page in late September, and it is why the two later deadlines matter so much: D-Prize Global Competition 2026-2027 for Distribution Entrepreneurs in November and Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge 2027 in February give you actual preparation time.
The rolling programme sits outside the cycle entirely. Jasiri Talent Investor Cohort 9: food-systems venture programme with USD 28,000 grants accepts applications continuously, which means a file submitted in a quiet month meets less competition than one submitted into a deadline rush.
What agricultural funders ask that others do not
Two things recur across both halves of this field.
Location specificity. A proposal about smallholder productivity in general reads as nothing. A proposal about a named district, a named crop and a named constraint reads as work. Committees in this sector have usually done fieldwork themselves and can tell the difference in a paragraph.
Evidence over intention. The delivery half in particular wants to know what already exists: the intervention, the trial that proved it, the reason it has not spread. D-Prize built its entire competition around that framing, and applicants who propose inventing something new consistently lose to applicants who propose distributing something old.
The budget line applicants forget
Agricultural work costs money before the award arrives. Fieldwork means transport, and transport in rural districts is rarely cheap or predictable.
Read what each programme covers against what your work actually needs. AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship 2027 in South Africa (closed) covers flights, housing and insurance, which makes it usable without savings. Jasiri Talent Investor Cohort 9: food-systems venture programme with USD 28,000 grants covers all of that plus a stipend, which is why an accelerator place can be worth more than a larger grant that pays only project costs. APNI African Plant Nutrition Outreach Fellowship Competition (closed) covers travel but not living expenses, so budget for the weeks around the event rather than just the trip.
The delivery programmes work differently. D-Prize Global Competition 2026-2027 for Distribution Entrepreneurs and Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge 2027 pay into the venture, not to you, and neither assumes you have a salary from somewhere else. Founders who plan on living off a distribution grant usually discover the shortfall in month three. Plan a bridge.
Check each official page before applying. Amounts and award counts in this field change between cycles more often than in academic funding, and the funder's own page is the only authoritative version.
