Arts and Design Funding for Africans in 2027

Seven funded arts opportunities tracked here, including three that cover travel and accommodation, and one that pays up to twenty thousand dollars to photographers.

Arts funding rewards a portfolio, not a transcript. Of the seven programmes tracked here, five ask to see work you have already made and only one is a conventional degree scholarship. That inverts the usual advice, and it means an artist without a master's competes on equal terms with one who has three.

The other structural fact worth knowing: three of the seven cover travel and accommodation. In a field where the award is often small, who pays for the flight decides whether the award is usable.

Residencies and fellowships that move you

Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships 2027 from Vital Impacts is the largest by award size: between USD 5,000 and USD 20,000 across 17 awards for environmental photography, with travel and accommodation covered to an exhibition in Italy. It runs on a rolling deadline and spans 12 months. There is no degree requirement, no institutional affiliation, and no application fee.

workspacebrussels Studio Residency Open Call for Artists at workspacebrussels is a studio residency with 15 places, paying EUR 750 with travel and accommodation covered, closing 1 December 2026. Applications can be submitted in Dutch, French or English, which makes it one of the few residencies genuinely open to francophone applicants without an English test.

The Image Centre Research Fellowships 2027 in Toronto for photography research (closed) at The Image Centre, Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada awards between CAD 2,500 and CAD 10,000 across six research fellowships for photography, closing 18 October 2026. Read the coverage line: stipend yes, travel no, accommodation no. That combination changes the maths considerably for anyone applying from outside North America.

The larger institutional posts

Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program 2027 in the United States (closed) at the Smithsonian in United States pays between USD 45,000 and USD 65,000 per year for 12 months, open at master's, doctoral and postdoctoral level across natural sciences, humanities, environment and arts. Deadline 15 October 2026. It is the best-paid opportunity in this field on the site by a wide margin.

Africa Institute Fellowships 2027 in Sharjah for African studies (closed) at The Africa Institute, Global Studies University in United Arab Emirates runs 12 months for postdoctoral researchers and professionals, combining humanities, social sciences and arts. Applications opened 6 July 2026 and close 30 September 2026. For scholars working on African studies specifically, the institutional focus is unusually aligned.

UNESCO Japan Young Researchers Fellowships Programme (closed) from UNESCO funds master's and doctoral research in Japan and lists arts and design among seven eligible fields. It closes 30 September 2026 and runs through national commissions rather than direct application, which adds an administrative layer most applicants discover too late.

One degree scholarship

Adelaide University Research Scholarships in Australia at Adelaide University in Australia covers tuition, stipend and insurance for 48 months of doctoral or master's research, with arts and design among the eligible areas. Applications opened 31 August 2026 and close 30 September 2026.

If your practice is research-led rather than production-led, this is the only route here that funds a full qualification. Everything else funds a project or a period of work.

Portfolio beats paperwork

Across the five non-degree programmes, selection turns on the same thing: sustained work on a subject, not a single strong image or object.

That means a series rather than a highlight reel. It means evidence that you kept returning to a place, a community or a question over time. And it means the relationship behind the work is visible: committees in photography and documentary practice read for whether the people in the frame agreed to be there.

Equipment almost never appears in selection criteria. Applicants assume it matters and it does not.

Where the money actually goes

Award size in this field is misleading on its own. A CAD 10,000 fellowship that excludes travel and housing in Canada may leave you worse off than a EUR 750 residency that covers both.

Work out the net position before you rank them:

The calendar, and the one exception

Four of the seven close between 30 September 2026 and 18 October 2026. workspacebrussels Studio Residency Open Call for Artists closes 1 December 2026.

Then there is Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships 2027, which has no deadline at all. Rolling calls are consistently underused because nothing forces action, and that is precisely their advantage: a strong portfolio submitted in a quiet month competes against far fewer files.

If you are reading this after the October cluster has passed, the rolling programme is not a fallback. With 17 awards and travel covered, it is arguably the strongest entry on this page.

A note on eligibility breadth

Five of the seven accept all nationalities. UNESCO Japan Young Researchers Fellowships Programme (closed) runs through a listed set of member states, and applicants should check whether their country appears before investing effort in a research proposal.

Preparing one application file for all seven

The overlap between these calls is larger than it looks, and building the material once saves most of the work.

A portfolio of 15 to 20 images or objects, sequenced as a body of work rather than a best-of. Committees read sequence. A strong set in a weak order loses to a modest set with an argument.

A project statement of roughly 500 words that says what you are making, where, and why it has to be made now. Avoid theory unless the funder asks for it. Two of these calls are run by museums and one by a research centre, and even those read practical statements more generously than abstract ones.

One or two references from people who have seen you work, not people with impressive titles. A curator who hung your show is worth more than a professor who taught you once.

Proof that you can complete something. A finished exhibition, a published series, a self-organised show. The residencies in particular are choosing between people who might make work and people who demonstrably do.

Arts remains one of the more open fields on this site: no language test is required anywhere on this list, credentials matter less than work, and two programmes accept applications in French. Verify every deadline on the funder's own page before relying on it.
