Journalism Fellowships for African Reporters in 2027
Four funded journalism fellowships currently tracked on this site, what each one pays, and which ones you can do without leaving your newsroom.
Journalism funding behaves differently from academic funding. There is no tuition to waive and no degree at the end. What these programmes buy you is time, an editor, and a byline in a place your local readers cannot reach. The four fellowships tracked here are all open to applicants who are not enrolled anywhere, and half of them never ask you to board a plane.
That last point matters more than it sounds. A visa refusal has ended more African applications than a weak portfolio ever did.
What the four programmes actually pay
The Tech Policy Press fellowship at Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: USD 10,000 remote fellowship on tech and democracy (closed) pays USD 10,000 in total across twelve months and runs entirely remotely. It sits at the intersection of technology, democracy and law, and it wants evidence that you can write in English rather than a certificate saying so.
The Open Notebook Early-Career Science Journalism Fellowship 2027 from The Open Notebook pays USD 6,600 over the same twelve months, also remote, also part time. The money is smaller. The structure is tighter: four commissioned articles, a named mentor, weekly calls, and a standing invitation to the community of past fellows after the year ends. For someone who has published a few science stories and wants to turn that into a habit, the mentoring is worth more than the difference in stipend.
Asharami Square Energy Reporting Fellowship 2026 for journalists across Africa takes a different shape. Run by Sahara Group, it awards between USD 3,500 and USD 5,000 to each of ten reporters covering energy across the continent, and it is the only one of the four restricted to African nationals. Ten awards is a generous field by the standards of this sector.
Then there is Chicago Booth Journalists in Residence Program Fellowship (closed), the residency at Chicago Booth in United States. It is the outlier: a twelve-week stay on campus with airfare, visa fees and health insurance reimbursed, aimed at working journalists who want to understand political economy properly rather than fake it on deadline.
Remote or resident: pick before you write anything
Two of these are remote, two are not. That single split should decide where you spend your effort.
A remote fellowship removes the visa, the flight, the accommodation search and the conversation with your employer about a three-month absence. It also removes the immersion. You stay in your beat, your sources stay reachable, and your rent does not change. If you have children, a mortgage, or a staff job you cannot leave, the remote programmes are not a consolation prize. They are the ones you can realistically finish.
A residency gives you something no video call reproduces: a room full of people who think about your subject all day. Chicago Booth Journalists in Residence Program Fellowship (closed) covers the airfare and the visa fees, which removes the usual reason African applicants self-select out. Read the reimbursement wording carefully, though. Reimbursement means you pay first.
Experience limits cut both ways
Most journalism funders set a ceiling, not a floor. The Open Notebook Early-Career Science Journalism Fellowship 2027 asks for fewer than three years of regular professional science writing, and says plainly that internships and student work do not count against that total. If you have been freelancing quietly for two years while doing something else for money, you are probably still eligible and probably assume you are not.
The others read the opposite way. Chicago Booth Journalists in Residence Program Fellowship (closed) wants journalists with some years behind them. Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: USD 10,000 remote fellowship on tech and democracy (closed) expects you to arrive with a position on tech policy, not to develop one during the year.
Sort the four by where you sit on that curve before you sort them by money.
Language is the quiet filter
All four operate in English, and each handles it slightly differently. The Open Notebook Early-Career Science Journalism Fellowship 2027 requires the application, the writing samples and the recommendation letters in English, but accepts translations of work you originally published in another language. That clause is doing real work for francophone, lusophone and arabophone reporters, and most applicants never read far enough to find it.
Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: USD 10,000 remote fellowship on tech and democracy (closed) asks for evidence of your own command of English rather than a test score. Chicago Booth Journalists in Residence Program Fellowship (closed) asks for proficiency. None of the four demands a language certificate, which puts journalism among the more accessible funded fields on this site.
The calendar runs September to November
The four deadlines land between 20 September 2026 and 30 November 2026. That is a narrow window, and it repeats with reasonable consistency year to year.
Two practical consequences follow. First, your clips need to exist before September, because no one assembles a portfolio in the week before a deadline. Second, the references. Every one of these asks for at least one letter from an editor or mentor, and editors are slow. Ask in August for a deadline in October.
What to prepare once and reuse four times
The application material overlaps heavily across all four. Build it once:
- Two to three published pieces aimed at a general audience, not an academic one. Translations count where the funder says so.
- A short biography in the third person, under two hundred words.
- One reference letter from an editor who has actually assigned you work.
- Two story ideas, written as brief proposals rather than full pitches.
The story ideas are where applications separate. Funders in this field read hundreds of competent portfolios and very few specific, reportable proposals. A pitch that names the source you would call and the document you would request beats a paragraph about why the topic matters.
Where journalism sits against other fields
Four funded programmes is a thin field compared with health or environment, where this site tracks far more. But the competition is thinner too, and the entry requirements are lower: no degree, no test score, no institutional affiliation, no application fee.
If you write and you are African, this is one of the few fields where a freelancer with a handful of clips competes on level ground with a staff reporter at a national daily. Check each official page before you apply. Deadlines move, and the funder's own page is the only version that counts.
