Scholarships, grants and fellowships for Rwandan applicants 2027

Rwandan applicants can still reach 25 open calls, but not for long: the earliest deadline is 5 October 2026 and the latest is 20 October. Only four print Rwanda in a list of eligible countries. The rest admit Rwandans through a wider rule, from any African country to no nationality limit at all. Six qualify as fully funded. Read the closing hour as carefully as the date, because hours set in Pacific or Eastern Time move to late evening or the next morning in Kigali.

What is open to Rwandans now

Fellowships dominate, with 12 of the 25. Next come eight scholarships and four grants, and a lone training programme completes the list. Behind them stand 24 funders, because African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES) runs two of the grants. Postdoctoral researchers have the most choice, with ten calls. Master's and PhD applicants have eight each. Five calls are aimed at people already in work, three accept any level, and a single call mentions undergraduates. Seven calls cover the social sciences, the most common field, and six are open to any discipline.

Four calls name Rwanda outright: Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed), Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed), Commonwealth Master's Scholarships 2027/28 for Study in the UK and University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027. Seven more are limited to a group that Rwanda belongs to. The remaining 14 take every nationality.

Digital Science Catalyst Grant 2026 for AI tools that act on research (closed), open at any level, can split its award of up to GBP 25,000 among several recipients.

Fully funded calls in closing order

The fully funded tag goes to a scholarship or fellowship only if tuition and living costs are both paid. Grants qualify on the living allowance alone. Six calls meet the test, and half of them name Rwanda.

1. Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed) is due at 13:00 Kigali time on 6 October. Any subject, twelve months in the United Kingdom, fees and living costs paid, and two years of experience required.
2. Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027: Fully Funded Graduate Study at Stanford (closed) is due at 22:00 the same evening. Any Stanford graduate programme qualifies, and for up to three years the award meets tuition and fees, living and academic expenses, and a yearly economy-class ticket.
3. ARC-GSSP Postgraduate Scholarships for African Students (closed) is due at 1:59 on 8 October in Kigali. Any African national may apply. Postgraduates in mathematics, in engineering, or in environment and climate can hold it for up to two years in South Africa, Ghana, Senegal or Côte d'Ivoire, with full fees, a stipend and travel support.
4. AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grants 2026 for PhD Researchers (closed) is due at 1:59 on 17 October in Kigali. A PhD researcher spending a month outside their own country can receive at most EUR 2,300 toward travel and subsistence, and EUR 3,000 for two months. The allowance earns the label, but no degree is funded.
5. Commonwealth Master's Scholarships 2027/28 for Study in the UK is due at 17:00 Kigali time on 20 October. Fees agreed with the UK university are covered in full for the 12-month master's, along with an approved airfare both ways and a monthly allowance of GBP 1,712, or GBP 2,000 in and around London.
6. University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027 is due the same day, at 17:00 or 18:00 Kigali time. Sussex covers overseas doctoral fees in full, a stipend, fieldwork costs, a Research Training Support Grant and a flight to the UK and back.

Two postdoctoral awards cover a lot but list no tuition, so neither carries the label. Cornell Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainability 2027 offers four fellows a USD 65,000 salary for each of three years, with USD 12,000 more per year earmarked for research and travel. Mohamed Ali Foundation Fellowship 2027 at Durham University covers lodging and all meals for the whole stay, makes a travel grant available for research, and pays an honorarium on completion.

Calls for East Africa, Africa or developing countries

No call here is limited to East Africa, and none is reserved for Rwanda alone. Seven apply a wider filter, and Rwanda passes each one.

Any African nationality. Besides ARC-GSSP Postgraduate Scholarships for African Students (closed), this group holds African Climate Collaborative PhD Fellowships 2027 at UCT (closed), whose 12 doctoral fellowships last 48 months and cover climate, the environment and social science. Kigali and Cape Town share a clock, so its 15 October deadline of 23:00 is the same hour for you.

Sub-Saharan Africa. The two AGNES grants belong here, and both applications must be in English. AGNES-BAYER Science Foundation Research Grant 2026 for PhD Students (closed) is for PhD work on agriculture or on environment and climate, and no award exceeds EUR 7,000. AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grants 2026 for PhD Researchers (closed), the mobility grant above, accepts any discipline.

Developing countries. All three are master's courses in Germany with a DAAD EPOS scholarship attached and a two-year experience rule: ISATEC (MSc Marine Biology), University of Bremen: DAAD EPOS 2027 (closed), Sustainable Renewable Energy Technologies MSc, Oldenburg: EPOS 2027 (closed) and International Health MSc, Charité Berlin: DAAD EPOS Scholarship 2027 (closed). The listings say nothing about what EPOS pays, so check each official page.

Neighbours on the named lists. Uganda and Tanzania appear with Rwanda on all four named lists. Kenya is on three but missing from University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027. Burundi and DR Congo are eligible for Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed) and Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed), yet neither appears on the two Commonwealth lists that include Rwanda.

Closing dates in Kigali time, soonest first

Rwanda's clock sits two hours ahead of UTC, on Central Africa Time, and never shifts for summer. Through 20 October that equals German, Danish and South African time. A British hour reads one hour later in Kigali, a GMT or UTC hour two hours later, and a United States hour six to nine hours later.

Getting a Rwandan application ready

Rule yourself in or out first. Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed) and each EPOS course need two years of experience, AIAS Visiting Fellowships 2027: Unsalaried Research Visits in Denmark (closed) needs four, and Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed) takes no one past 35.

Then the language. If part of your schooling was in French, look hard at ISATEC (MSc Marine Biology), University of Bremen: DAAD EPOS 2027 (closed). Its rule catches non-native speakers of English as well as anyone whose most recent degree was not taught entirely in English, and both must prove C1. Read literally, that includes a native Kinyarwanda speaker with an English-medium degree, so ask Bremen before you book a test. Sustainable Renewable Energy Technologies MSc, Oldenburg: EPOS 2027 (closed) accepts B2 on any of seven named tests, University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027 requires a valid IELTS certificate, and no listing here waives IELTS.

CEES Fellowship Program Spring 2027: Research Stay in Switzerland (closed) accepts English only, sent as one PDF, so a transcript issued in French or Kinyarwanda needs translating first.

Contact referees this week. IAIFI Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027-2030 at MIT (closed) sets 7 October as the date by which every letter must be in. For The Image Centre Research Fellowships 2027 in Toronto for photography research, referees' letters are emailed together with the application itself. The EUR 2,500 a month at Bayreuth depends on your home institution, or your most recent funder, confirming that you draw no salary.

Budget for the gaps. Leading for Humanity 2027: Tutu Foundation Leadership Programme (closed) covers the programme, your room and your meals, but not the trip to South Africa. The Image Centre Research Fellowships 2027 in Toronto for photography research fellows pay flights, research and other costs out of one CAD 10,000 stipend. Commonwealth Master's Scholarships 2027/28 for Study in the UK buys no tickets for dependants, and AIAS Visiting Fellowships 2027: Unsalaried Research Visits in Denmark (closed) is unsalaried, so your employer must keep paying you in Denmark.

File a day ahead. Five converted closing hours fall between 1:00 and 7:00 in Kigali, and a failed upload at that hour cannot be repeated once the portal shuts.

Where is Rwanda named as an eligible country?

The Mandela Washington listing carries no funding information, while the other three are fully funded.

Can a Rwandan get a master's paid for in full?

Yes. Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: One-Year UK Master's (closed) and Commonwealth Master's Scholarships 2027/28 for Study in the UK both name Rwanda and fund a one-year UK master's. Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027: Fully Funded Graduate Study at Stanford (closed) and ARC-GSSP Postgraduate Scholarships for African Students (closed) are open to Rwandans too.

Can I apply in French?

Nothing in these listings suggests it. Every listing that states a language includes English, and none mentions applying in French. Mohamed Ali Foundation Fellowship 2027 at Durham University lists French only as one of four languages its fellows must read, with Arabic, Ottoman Turkish and English.
