PhD Scholarships for African Students 2027: Fully Funded Options

A PhD scholarship can mean four different things for an African applicant: a paid doctorate, a short research visit, a project grant or support for early-career scholars. Of the 25 PhD-level programmes open to African applicants at the time of writing, four state that they pay both tuition and a living stipend. Know which kind you are applying for before you write a word. The first deadlines fall on 30 September 2026 and the last on 17 November 2026.

How PhD funding for African students works

The first kind is the full doctoral scholarship, which pays for the degree itself. Adelaide University Research Scholarships in Australia give a 100% tuition fee waiver, a living allowance and insurance over 48 months. With University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027, you get full overseas PhD tuition fees, a stipend, return travel to the United Kingdom, a Research Training Support Grant and fieldwork costs. Aim for these if you have not yet started a doctorate.

The second kind is the visiting fellowship. You stay registered at your home university and spend a few months at a host institute. UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship in Helsinki with EUR 2,100 a month (closed) adds travel and medical insurance to its monthly stipend for a three-month stay in Finland. Through Senckenberg Global Fellowships in Germany for Global South researchers (closed), PhD students receive 1,600 € a month for 3 months, in selected cases up to 6, plus travel. UNESCO Japan Young Researchers Fellowships Programme (closed) gives up to USD 10,000 as a lump sum for a research stay, but the grant does not cover tuition fees.

The third kind is the research grant. It is a capped sum for a project, not a salary. AGNES-BAYER Science Foundation Research Grant 2026 for PhD Students (closed) awards a maximum of EUR 7,000 to each successful applicant, and IFRA-Nigeria Research Grants 2027 for Humanities and Social Sciences can reach €1,000 depending on the nature and budget of the project. TANGO2 Research Foundation TDD Research Pathways Grant (closed) offers up to USD 15,000 for health research over 12 months. Plan this money for fieldwork next to a scholarship, not instead of one.

The fourth kind targets early-career scholars. CIFAR Global Scholars Program for Early-Career Researchers provides CAD 100,000 in unrestricted research support over 24 months. Hoover Fellow Position 2027 at Stanford's Hoover Institution for early-career scholars is a salaried post with a 12-month base salary range of $169,950 to $230,000 and a $20,000 annual housing allowance. Read the level rules closely before you apply as a current student.

Fully funded PhD scholarships open now, by host country

Four of these awards pay tuition and a living stipend, and a fifth covers living costs under separate headings.

Australia

Adelaide University Research Scholarships in Australia accept all nationalities in arts and design, public policy and governance, agriculture, health and medicine, and environment and climate. The 30 September 2026 date is for expressions of interest, which opened on 31 August 2026.

United Kingdom

For University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027, the eligible countries are Gambia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia. Any field is accepted. You apply online on the Commonwealth Scholarships Application System by 16:00 GMT on 20 October 2026, and you need a valid IELTS certificate.

United States

Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027: Fully Funded Graduate Study at Stanford (closed) funds up to three years of any graduate degree at Stanford, for applicants of all nationalities. The package covers tuition and associated fees, a stipend for living and academic expenses such as room, board and books, and a travel stipend for one economy-class trip to and from Stanford each year. If your degree lasts longer than three years, ask the department how the later years are funded.

Canada

Applicants from all African countries can apply for Mastercard Foundation Doctor of Public Health Scholarships 2027 (closed), and 7 awards are available. The funder describes full financial support for tuition, travel expenses, housing, food, books and other expenses for the duration of the programme.

Russia

Open Doors Russian Scholarship 2027/28 for International Students covers tuition fees and a monthly stipend. Everything else is yours: transportation, food, accommodation, communication services and medical insurance. Universities teach in Russian or in English depending on the institution, and registration closes on 1 November 2026, after which you can no longer edit your account or portfolio.

Two more awards pay tuition, but their listings do not confirm a stipend. Czech Government Scholarships 2027/2028 for Ethiopia, Gabon, Mauritania and Zambia (closed) accept any field at public universities in Czechia. DFFE Full-time Bursary Programme 2027 for South African students in environmental fields (closed) covers tuition, with a maximum of ZAR 80,000 a year.

Read the hour as closely as the date. Senckenberg closes at noon in Germany, not at midnight. The UNESCO call for Japan closes at midnight Paris time on 30 September, and midnight on a date can be read as the first minute of that day, so submit a full day early. The Knight-Hennessy cutoff of 1:00 pm Pacific Time on 6 October arrives at 21:00 in Lagos and 23:00 in Nairobi, which leaves East African applicants almost no evening. The Mastercard Foundation deadline, by contrast, falls in the early hours of 2 October across Africa. Do not plan around those extra hours.

PhD scholarships and grants inside Africa

You do not have to leave the continent to fund doctoral work, and several awards here pay for research done in Africa.

African Climate Collaborative PhD Fellowships 2027 at UCT (closed) are run by the University of Cape Town: 12 fellowships lasting 48 months, open to applicants from all African countries in environment and climate or social sciences. The listing does not state what the fellowship pays, so read the call before you budget.

AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship 2027 in South Africa (closed) brings PhD researchers from developing countries for a three-month study visit. Fields include economics, social sciences, environment and climate, agriculture and engineering. Living costs are covered by a stipend of approximately $600 per month, and travel, insurance and accommodation are included.

Two grants come from African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES), both for applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa. Applications must be in English. AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grants 2026 for PhD Researchers (closed) fund a stay of one to two months outside your own country, with a maximum of EUR 2,300 to EUR 3,000 depending on the length of the stay, covering travel and subsistence. The host institute can also receive a research allowance on request. AGNES-BAYER Science Foundation Research Grant 2026 for PhD Students (closed) supports doctoral research in environment and climate or agriculture.

IFRA-Nigeria Research Grants 2027 for Humanities and Social Sciences cover research hosted in Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Chad and Togo. Applicants of all nationalities are accepted, and you may apply in French or English.

The DFFE bursary is for South African students only, with South Africa as the host country. It covers environment and climate, natural sciences, engineering and law, and no late applications will be accepted.

How to prepare a strong PhD application

Start with eligibility, because no essay can fix a nationality or age mismatch. France-South Africa Scholarship Programme 2027 for Graduates (closed) takes applicants from South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi for study in France. UNESCO Japan Young Researchers Fellowships Programme (closed) has an age limit of 40, and World Bank Group Young Professionals Program 2027 (closed) asks for at least two years of experience.

Then find your supervisor or host. For a research stay, the host is part of the file: the UNESCO fellowship for Japan asks for reading and writing proficiency in the language of instruction or supervision at your proposed host institution. Write to a potential supervisor weeks before the deadline, with your research question, a one-page summary of the project and your CV, and ask plainly whether they would host or supervise you.

Size the proposal to the award. A three-month visit at UNU-WIDER or Senckenberg needs a piece of work you can finish in that time, such as a paper or a chapter. A 48-month studentship needs a full research plan and a clear reason why that host fits your question. UNU-WIDER takes economics and social sciences, while Senckenberg wants natural sciences or environment and climate.

Brief your referees early, and give them the deadline in their own time zone. PhD scholarships for Africans: frequently asked questions

Can African students get a fully funded PhD abroad?

Yes, but few awards pay for everything. Adelaide University Research Scholarships in Australia, University of Sussex Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027, Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027: Fully Funded Graduate Study at Stanford (closed) and Open Doors Russian Scholarship 2027/28 for International Students state both tuition and a stipend. The Mastercard Foundation award adds housing, food and books to tuition and travel. Open Doors leaves transport, accommodation and insurance to you.

Do I need IELTS for a PhD scholarship?

Not always. Sussex asks for a valid IELTS certificate. The Czech government scholarships use an online English entrance test during the application instead, and the UNESCO fellowship for Japan looks at the language of your host institution. UNU-WIDER and CIFAR ask for fluent English, and AfricaLics for adequate literacy in English.

Is there an age limit?

The UNESCO fellowship for Japan sets a maximum age of 40. None of the other programmes in this guide states an age limit in its listing.

Visiting fellowships and grants. UNU-WIDER, Senckenberg, AfricaLics and the UNESCO fellowship for Japan fund research stays. The two AGNES grants and IFRA-Nigeria fund mobility or research costs.

What if I miss this round?

Some calls repeat. UNU-WIDER takes applications until 31 March and 30 September each year, and Senckenberg until 1 March and 1 October. For the others, watch the official page for the next cycle.

Are there PhD-level fellowships in the humanities?

Yes. Bayreuth Academy Fellowships in African Studies, Germany (closed) pay 2,500 EUR per month to fellows who receive no pay from their home institution and 1,000 EUR per month to those on a paid sabbatical, with 15 fellowships on offer. I Tatti Digital Humanities Fellowship: six months in Florence with USD 5,200 a month adds a one-time relocation supplement of up to USD 1,800 to its monthly grant, but only 2 fellowships are available. Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program 2027 in the United States (closed) pays USD 45,000 to USD 65,000 a year, depending on the category.
