Fellowships for African Professionals 2027: Leadership, Law, Media

Most fellowships for professionals ask for something a student cannot offer: a record of work, and often an employer who will let you go for months. This guide covers 25 open calls for African professionals and mid-career applicants, from the Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed) to a salaried year for women lawyers. Only five of them set a minimum number of years of experience. Others limit eligibility by age, gender or nationality. Check those rules before you write a word, because no essay can fix a nationality or age mismatch. The first deadline falls on 30 September 2026 and the last fixed one on 15 February 2027.

What "for professionals" means in these calls

The label covers very different programmes, so start with the entry rules. Five calls state a minimum number of years of experience:

• at least 7 years: Getty Conservation Guest Scholars Program in the USA (closed) and Women in Agriculture Leadership Program Fellowship, Second Cohort
• at least 5 years: Chevening OCIS Fellowship 2027 at Oxford for Professionals (closed)
• at least 3 years: Equality Fund Global Journalism Fellowship 2026: CAD 4,000 Stipend
• at least 2 years: FOR-GHP Fellowship 2027: outbreak readiness for sub-Saharan Africa

The other 20 give no minimum in years. Several define the applicant by career stage instead. CFJ Fellowship 2027 for Early-Career Women Lawyers and The Open Notebook Early-Career Science Journalism Fellowship 2027 are written for early-career applicants, while the Africa Institute call is for senior and postdoctoral fellows. Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed) has an age limit of 35, the only one in this list.

Six programmes also accept postdoctoral researchers, and IFRA-Nigeria Research Grants 2027 for Humanities and Social Sciences and McDonald Fellowship for MS Researchers from Developing Countries take master's and PhD applicants as well. There you compete with academics. Make your professional angle explicit.

Four calls fund an organisation, a venture or an innovation rather than one person's career. TEEEM Foundation Community Impact Grant 2026 for non-profits is for non-profits, with community grants of $5,000 to $10,000 for local projects. F. M. Kirby Prize for Scaling Impact: 2026 Call, USD 150,000 Award gives $150,000 in unrestricted funding to a single winner. Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge 2027 makes 13 awards, starting with seed grants of $25,000 each, and Jasiri Talent Investor Cohort 9: food-systems venture programme with USD 28,000 grants pays USD 28,000 per venture in three tranches tied to milestones.

Leadership and policy fellowships

Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for Young African Leaders (closed) offers more places than any other programme here that gives a number: 550, hosted in the United States. Its fields are business and management, and public policy and governance. You must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English. The eligible list leaves out Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, but it includes Sudan and Mauritania. Applications close on 13 October 2026.

Mo Ibrahim Leadership Fellowships 2027 for Emerging African Leaders are open to applicants from every African country, but only 3 fellowships are on offer. Each lasts 12 months, with Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia and Switzerland as host countries. The call closes on 20 November 2026.

Chevening OCIS Fellowship 2027 at Oxford for Professionals (closed) is much narrower. It takes professionals with at least 5 years of experience from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Tunisia, as well as Malaysia and Türkiye. Six fellows spend five months at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, with living expenses, return economy airfare and an allowance for research-related activities.

Leading for Humanity 2027: Tutu Foundation Leadership Programme (closed) accepts all nationalities and is hosted in South Africa. The Foundation covers all programme costs, accommodation and meals, but participants or their sponsors pay for travel to and from South Africa. If your employer might sponsor you, ask early.

UNU Migration Management Diploma Programme in the Netherlands (closed) is a training programme in migration management, held in the Netherlands from 5 April to 24 June 2027. The scholarship pays for flights, accommodation, visa fees, meals, daily living expenses, health insurance and field trips. Applicants from across Africa, and from India, are eligible.

Women in Agriculture Leadership Program Fellowship, Second Cohort is open only to applicants from Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Senegal. It runs for 24 months in agriculture and climate work, and English-speaking and French-speaking candidates apply through separate online portals.

Sector fellowships: law, journalism, health and technology

Law

CFJ Fellowship 2027 for Early-Career Women Lawyers combines three limits: gender, career stage and country. It is for early-career women lawyers from Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and Gambia. Each of the 10 fellows spends 12 months with a host organisation in one of those four countries, and that organisation pays the equivalent of a competitive gross annual salary in local currency. English fluency is required. Watch the hour. The call closes at noon South African time on 20 October 2026, which is 13:00 in Nairobi and 10:00 in Banjul.

Global South Visiting Scholar Programme 2027-2028 at Allard Law offers a three-month residency in Canada to law scholars and practitioners from developing countries.

Journalism and media

Equality Fund Global Journalism Fellowship 2026: CAD 4,000 Stipend asks for at least 3 years of experience and fluent English, and it is open to journalists from developing countries. The fellowship is remote, lasts 6 months and has 5 places. It pays a CAD 4,000 stipend plus up to $500 in reporting expenses.

The Open Notebook Early-Career Science Journalism Fellowship 2027 is remote too, but part-time, over 12 months from 9 February 2027, with a stipend of $6,600. Everything you send must be in English, including writing samples and letters of recommendation.

For Asharami Square Energy Reporting Fellowship 2026 for journalists across Africa, the entries are stories published or broadcast between January and 30 November 2026. The call lists 10 awards and up to $5,000 in total fellowship value, including a $3,500 grand prize.

Health

FOR-GHP Fellowship 2027: outbreak readiness for sub-Saharan Africa trains health professionals from sub-Saharan Africa in outbreak readiness from 1 December 2026 to 7 July 2028. There are no tuition fees, and the budget covers economy-class flights, visa fees and accommodation for the three workshops. No per diems are paid. The host countries are Germany, Ghana and Uganda.

McDonald Fellowship for MS Researchers from Developing Countries is a two-year grant of EUR 55,000 per year for MS researchers from developing countries. The money goes to the host institution, which pays the fellow, and one return flight is covered.

Technology and research

Internet Society Fellowship Program 2027: USD 5,000 Project Stipend is remote, lasts 10 months and has 90 places, with a project stipend of up to USD 5,000 once the project budget is approved. Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship Programme 2027 (closed) runs for 15 months from 1 January 2027 in the United Kingdom. OpenAI AI and Teen Development Research Grant Program 2026 (closed) makes individual research grants of up to $1 million each, for projects in computer science, social sciences or health.

Five research residencies take professionals alongside academics. Africa Institute Fellowships 2027 in Sharjah for African studies (closed) offers 12 months in Sharjah for the humanities, social sciences, arts and design. Getty Conservation Guest Scholars Program in the USA (closed) pays $21,500 for three months and adds a workstation, an apartment in the Getty scholar housing complex and a travel stipend. CEES Fellowship Program Spring 2027: Research Stay in Switzerland (closed) covers living costs and travel for up to four months in Switzerland. Georg Arnhold Senior Fellowship 2028 at the GEI in Germany pays EUR 3,300 a month for six months in Brunswick, and has one place. IFRA-Nigeria Research Grants 2027 for Humanities and Social Sciences reach €1,000 at most, for research hosted in Nigeria and eight other countries of West and Central Africa.

Read the hour as closely as the date. A deadline in Los Angeles or New York time only arrives on the next calendar day across Africa, while the CFJ call closes in the middle of an African working day. Midnight can be read as the start or the end of a day, so submit at least one day early. Jasiri reviews applications as they arrive and asks applicants to apply early.

How to show professional impact in an application

Treat every answer as evidence. A job title tells a panel where you sat, not what changed because you were there.

Open each example with the result, then explain how you reached it. "Drafted a policy brief" is a task. "The ministry adopted two of our four recommendations" is a result, and it makes the reader ask how. Use figures you can defend, such as cases handled, stories published or staff trained, and never round them up. A referee who saw the work should be able to confirm every number you give.

Match your examples to the field of the call. A migration officer applying to UNU Migration Management Diploma Programme in the Netherlands (closed) should describe a migration case. For Asharami Square Energy Reporting Fellowship 2026 for journalists across Africa, your published stories are the entry itself, so choose those with the clearest effect.

Choose referees who watched you work, not the most senior name you know, and send them the facts you cite so their letters match your account.

Settle leave before you apply. A letter from your employer that approves five months at Oxford or six months in Brunswick answers the practical question of whether you can attend at all. If you are close to a minimum number of years, read how the official page counts experience before you submit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my job during the fellowship?

With some programmes, yes. Equality Fund Global Journalism Fellowship 2026: CAD 4,000 Stipend, The Open Notebook Early-Career Science Journalism Fellowship 2027 and Internet Society Fellowship Program 2027: USD 5,000 Project Stipend are remote, and The Open Notebook fellowship is part-time. Residential programmes take you away for months: three at the Getty, five at Oxford and six at the Georg Eckert Institute.

Which programmes accept applications in French?

IFRA-Nigeria Research Grants 2027 for Humanities and Social Sciences accept French or English, and Women in Agriculture Leadership Program Fellowship, Second Cohort has a separate portal for French-speaking candidates. Every other programme here that names a language names English.

Do I need IELTS?

Only FOR-GHP Fellowship 2027: outbreak readiness for sub-Saharan Africa lists test scores, and even there IELTS is not required: TOEFL iBT 79-80, IELTS 6.0, native-speaker status or a degree completed in English are all accepted. No other listing mentions IELTS.

My country is not on any list. What can I still apply for?

Thirteen calls accept all nationalities, including Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship Programme 2027 (closed), CEES Fellowship Program Spring 2027: Research Stay in Switzerland (closed) and Leading for Humanity 2027: Tutu Foundation Leadership Programme (closed).
